Healthy eating for conception

Clara Ng, Nutritionist
It takes two to make a baby! So if you and your partner are trying for one, it’s important that you both eat a healthy, nutritious diet. If you love your fast food this may seem a little daunting, but a few weeks or months of healthy living is a small price to play for a baby. And who knows, you may even learn to enjoy your new lifestyle!

Why a healthy diet is important for dads-to-be

The healthier your diet, the better your chances of your partner conceiving! That’s because the quality of your sperm is directly affected by your nutrition. And with about 32% of infertility problems traced to men, it’s worth giving up fast food for a few months to give yourself the best chance of getting your partner pregnant.

What is a healthy diet?

While you’re trying to conceive your diet should be as varied and nutritious as your partner’s. Basically this means eating lots of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean meats.

The importance of zinc, folates and vitamin C

Zinc, folates and other foods rich in antioxidants like vitamin C help your body to produce healthy sperm and kill off abnormal sperm. Smoking, on the other hand, affects your body’s ability to absorb vitamin C. So if you smoke, you might want to consider quitting.

Good sources of zinc, folates and vitamin C

• Bananas
• Broccoli
• Dark chicken meat
• Grapefruit
• Minced beef
• Orange juice
• Papaya
• Sprouts
• Wholegrain cereals

Coffee and alcohol

Good news if you’re a caffeine addict – it’s okay to drink coffee! Studies show that caffeine can help improve your sperm’s ability to move.

Too much alcohol, however, isn’t such a good idea. Heavy drinking can affect your testosterone levels, and affect your body’s ability to produce sperm.
